Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zyliss Soft Skin PeelerCustomer Review: This peeler looks pretty but she's not dumb. Summary: 5 Stars
Perhaps peeling tomato and bell pepper is like taking shower every day. You know the right way to do, and you do it when your guests are watching you in the kitchen but you may skip it when you are too lazy and cooking for just yourself. You still want to continue the old way to peel tomato by blanching and bell peppers by putting it in an open flame, just to impress your guests. But you might find this product very useful when no one is watching. This peeler does a fantastic job in peeling tomato, pear, kiwi, bell pepper, and a lot of other things. It's versatile and it can be used with carrots, lotus root, and whatever else as long as you don't mind the lines made by the serrated blades. Personally, I use a separate peeler for those, just to keep this one absolutely sharp for the most tricky soft skins.
Now, something I don't like: the product description mentions ginger. I find it pretty useless. You don't need a peeler to peel ginger. Use a tablespoon, table knife, or whatever you find a dull blunt edge to scrape the skin off. You do not need a peeler for ginger.
Finally, I might suggest to save the peeled skin of some vegetables: tomato, lotus root, burdock, carrot, apple, pear, etc. Many fruits and vegetables have more flavor-rich compounds as well as nutrients in the skin, and the vegetables I mentioned above add flavor when added to the pot when making stock, particularly chicken broth or soupe de poisson. I freeze them until I accumulate enough to make a hearty soup in a cold Boston winter day. However, the skin of many fruits and vegetables are coated with wax containing fungicide and/or pesticide to prolong shelf life. Not a lot of them to be dangerous, but I recommend to scrub them in warm soapy water and rinse them before peeling if you use the skin for the stock.
Description of Zyliss Soft Skin PeelerZyliss Solf Skin Peeler quickly peels tomatoes, pears, kiwi and other soft fruits. The serrated blade easily follows the contours of the food efficiently removing even tough skins like ginger. The sharp steel blade easily removes produce blemishes. Soft-skinned fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, pears, and kiwi might be mangled by a conventional peeler. The serrated double-edged blade on this model slices away rather than saws at delicate produce. The steel blade easily follows the contours of smaller items, meaning it?s also great for removing tough skins from ginger. Double edges allow a back-and-forth peeling motion as well as left- or right-handed use. The extra-sharp steel tip is ideal for removing produce blemishes before cooking. This peeler is dishwasher-safe and features a comfortable, precise grip. --Mary Park
